We’ve all dreamed about having the perfect sleeper-mobile; you know, the one that sits at a traffic light, docile and unassuming, then annihilates the competition once the green light drops. Some of us, like this guy, follow that dream through to fruition.
The 1996 Dodge Caravan in stock form was saddled with a wimpy choice of engines; a 150-horse 2.4L four-cylinder or a choice of V6’s, neither of which made more than 180 horsepower. Factor in the 3600-pound curb-weight, stuff it full of teenage soccer players and then see whether it’s possible for the thing to out-accelerate a Yugo – probably not!
So the choice was made to slide in an SRT-4 engine complete with a 72mm Turbonetics turbocharger, an automatic transmission built to handle the power, and a sick-sounding 4-inch exhaust system. As the SRT-4 engine made an advertised 230 horses in stock form, adding the larger turbocharger and high boost levels turned this hot rod into one we wouldn’t think twice about adding to the driveway.
We’ve seen burnouts, and then we’ve seen burnouts. It takes a moment for the engine to spool up to full boost (and we’re amazed the brakes hold it back!) but the noise this machine makes while doing so is music to a turbo lover’s ears. Taking notice of the three-gauge pod stock on the driver’s A-pillar, we can only assume that more than a couple of bucks have been put into this thing, and according to the comments on the video, the minivan is for sale for $10K.
Unfortunately there aren’t any kind of performance numbers attached to know whether it’s something we could make our money back with at the local grudge nights, but if you’re in the market for a modded-up minivan, perhaps this is the one for you. And if you do have that teenage soccer team to cart around, maybe your local dragstrip is close to the soccer fields. You don’t need to watch every game Junior plays, do you?
