If you’ve ever been to any prestigious hot rod shows, chances are you’ve seen a Ridler Award contender or two in your life. But it’s very unlikely that you’ve seen any such vehicle driving around on the road, being used like a proper hot rod should. However, that’s exactly what ScottieDTV ran across at the recent National Street Rod Association Street Rod Nationals South Plus show in Knoxville, Tennessee when none other than Dale Turner arrived in his 2013 Ridler contender the 1947 Buick Super “Superliner.” Check it out in the video above.
Back in 2013, we had the honor of featuring Turner’s Buick. Just as gorgeous as ever, the Superliner has acquired a few more miles since we saw it last but is every bit the gem it was last year.
To create this unique hot rod, Turner combined classic styling with modern technology. Under the hood you’ll find a modern LS6 engine topped off with a Magnuson supercharger and intercooler.
This powerful combination is backed by a carbon fiber driveshaft, 4L65E Corvette transmission and a C4 Corvette rearend. The car also makes use of a fully boxed frame, 14-inch Wilwood discs (also designed for a C4 Corvette), Ridetech ShockWaves with a Ride Pro-E System, and 22-inch one-off wheels with floating center caps.
Style wise, Turner’s Buick has been transformed just enough to make it unique but not enough to take away from the classic design of yesteryear. In addition to laying the windshield back four inches (no, the car wasn’t chopped), the hood was pancaked and shortened by three inches and mounted to open from the front, the inner wheel wells and grille were handmade, custom glass was added all the way around and the fiberglass bumpers were Frenched.
You might also notice the shaved door handles, shaved tires and sidewalls, center exhaust detail, and lack of most of the car’s chrome. All of this is complimented by flawless Dupont Black paint.
Inside, Superliner features ambrosia maple wood accents, custom front and rear seats molded from fiberglass (the front ones are attached to swivels) and covered in premium leather, and a unique audio/media system, which features seat and rollbar-mounted speakers, as well as cameras in place of the rear and side mirrors. Also inside the car are custom gauges with copper trim, Twist Machine paddle shifters to control the gearbox and plenty of custom brightwork, as well as matching custom luggage for the trunk.
A truly magnificent machine, Turner’s Superliner is certainly one of the top cars we’ve seen and to know that he’s driving and enjoying it makes the story that much cooler! Like Turner says, “A car is absolutely no good if you can’t drive it.”
