For Flo and Gary Garman, the passion for building awesome project cars has been a shared one for years. It looks like when they decided to start on Project “Home Grown,” the fun hit a fever pitch. Now for sale through RK Motors Charlotte, the pickup truck seen here is a badass cocktail of presence and power.
As husband and wife, Flo and Gary decided beforehand that they wanted to make their third project vehicle a ’55 Chevy truck and to have a little more fun with the design. Each set out their stipulations for coloring–Flo wanted a green exterior and Gary wanted a red exterior. Mulling over ideas on how to properly reconcile this color scheme, the perfect option dawned on the couple: watermelons.
45 long weeks lay ahead of the duo. Flo looked for suitable parts while Gary and a friend went to work patching and welding the truck. In time, everything came together. The truck’s cab was sent to Chess Sprenkle Body & Paint in York Haven, Pennsylvania to be redone while Flo went about wet-sanding parts for Gary to lay PPG-mixed paint on.
What resulted at the end of those eleven-or-so months was an award-winning masterpiece of creativity and style. Chrome-trimmed headlights, body-matching emblems, a genuine oak bed, and chrome bumpers are just a few of the shimmering highlights of the build.
Underneath the hood sits a 355ci V8 tuned to a T by the folks at American Speed. The watermelon theme continues with the air cleaner, feeding down into a Holley Street Avenger carb that’s connected to an Edelbrock manifold. Add to this potent motor a superb Tremec TKO600 5-speed manual tranny and you’re looking at a truck that drives just as fine as it looks.
Inside, Gary’s handiwork is in full force with the lustrous red interior striking a definite wow factor. A sculpted seat, chrome-detailed dashboard, Vintage Air A/C, and Pioneer sound system are just a few of the great features. Certainly, every driver can appreciate the touches of old-fashioned style afforded by the excellent Classic Instruments gauge cluster resting behind the steering wheel.
