We’ve seen some pretty creative builds in the hot rod industry, but in terms of truly inventive this unique ride struck us when we first came across it on Fox News. After all, it’s made almost completely from Legos – yes those little nesting blocks we all used to play with as kids – and is a full-sized working vehicle. Check it out in the video above, compliments of Fox News.
The full-size Lego hot rod was built by Melbourne entrepreneur Steve Sammartino and his 20-year-old cohort, Raul Oaida. Sammartino met Oaida, a self-taught technology genius from Romania, online and as they say, the rest is history.
Funding for the project, which reached about $25,000, came from 40 different patrons that donated to the project, which was advertised by a simple Tweet from Sammartino.
Constructed of over 500,000 Legos, the hot rod is actually a viable vehicle. With a full Lego engine, actually a four-orbital engine setup with 256 Lego pistons, which runs on air, the roadster can reach speeds of up to 20mph. Not bad for a vehicle made of plastic playthings!
Of course, not everything on the hot rod is made of Legos. Components like the wheels (featuring Lego portraits of the car’s builders) and tires, and some chassis components are actual automotive products. Nonetheless, this fact takes nothing away from the astounding overall product and ingenious imagination that went into building this hot rod.
To showcase their Lego roadster, Sammartino and Oaida commissioned a website with pictures and information on the project, as well as a Facebook page.
Be sure to check both of them out for some creative inspiration for your next project.
