Video: Larson And Barry Cruise The Vegas Strip – Pro Street Style!

In its earliest beginnings, the concept of Pro Street was to bring together the baddest of the badass cars around the country that were race cars on the outside, but more than capable of taking a Sunday afternoon drive, driven to work or a car show, and even driven to the track and back. For many years, in order to even compete, these legitimate street machines had to prove their road-worthiness by completing a lengthy cruise through nearby cities and neighborhoods. But over time, Pro Street has become little more than Pro Modified with a different name. Full tube chassis and lightweight, modified carbon fiber bodies are in. And the last remaining semblance of Pro Street – working headlights, tail lights, and a horn, are out. Interestingly, however, the memo never reached the mailboxes of Larry Larson or Joe Barry.

Larson, the Missouri-based chassis builder and umpteen-time HOT ROD Drag Week champ with his 1966 Chevy II who needs no introduction, and Barry, with his absolutely stunning Colorado-based 1956 Chevrolet, were both in attendance at the 7th edition of the Street Car Super Nationals in Las Vegas last weekend, competing valiantly alongside their artificial brethren. Larson, with his 7.05 at 208.01 MPH best, ended qualifying in the 49th spot, well outside of the 32-car field, while Barry could muster only an off-pace 7.78 at 175.28 that left him 54th out of 55 entrants. But with perhaps the most famous stretch of road in America just a few miles from the track and a pair of throwback Pro Street rides in full compliance with Nevada state laws, their fun extended well beyond the confines of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

On Friday evening, after racing activities were finished up at The Strip, Larson and Barry climbed into their respective cars, fueled up, and headed for the other strip, where the pair cruised Las Vegas Boulevard in their high-six, low seven-second, 200 MPH capable cars for what we’ve been told was more than two hours while the cameras rolled. They negotiated traffic, stop-and-go driving, speed bumps, and the police, and Scott Sparrow and the crew at Promedia put together this gnarly video showing off the evening adventure. If a pair of real street cars, complete with steel bodies, steel bumpers, and capable of driving a good way across the country and then cracking off a mind-numbing pass doesn’t get your blood flowing, it’s highly likely that nothing will.
