When it comes to nostalgic racing, the annual Goodwood Member’s Meetings really takes the cake. The British event focuses on keeping the vintage, gentleman’s spirit in racing alive and well.
From purebred competition cars like Porsches, Jaguars, and McLarens, to old-school American greats like Shelbys, Camaros and Stingray Corvettes, the event is overflowing with dream machines of every class and almost every era – all in period-correct livery, to boot. The spotlight is, of course, on the rich heritage of everything pre-’70s, but there’s also attention given to the more modern, as well (such as auctions and late-model races). While all the golden-age race cars on display are no doubt incredible, what really grabbed our attention was the new race Goodwood hosted. This year’s Member’s Meeting, held on the weekend of March 19th and 20th, debuted the absolute mother lode of American throwback races – an event full of nothing but GT40s screaming around the track. Few things top the glorious choir of 30 world-beating American supercars going all out against each other, and the above video captures arguably the best angle.
What’s particularly great about this event is the fact that these legendary cars aren’t getting babied like you’d expect. The driver’s are definitely pushing each one to their limit, flinging them around that corner and forcing them to claw for grip as they mash the throttle on the straight away. The sound of all those American V8s – backed by the signature 180-degree headers – scrambling around the track like a pack of wild dogs is intoxicating. We can only imagine the permanent smiles glued to the faces of the lucky drivers.
