Mecum Auctions upcoming foray into Seattle, Washington, is generating lots of interest in the collector car world. By including the offering of a super rare 1971 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda Convertible, the auction might become what was known in the days of the car’s creation as a happening!
Identified on the Mecum website as lot number S95, this special piece of automotive treasure is one of the last two 1971 Hemi-powered, 4-speed ‘Cuda Convertibles known to exist. If that is not enough to get the juices flowing, it is the last one on the planet to be powered by its original, matching numbers drivetrain!
To put some numbers to just how rare this car is, 1970 saw only 14 Hemi ‘Cuda convertibles, but for 1971 that number dropped to just 11 of them. There were just three of the nine colors available offered up twice for 1971: FE5 (Rallye) Red, GW1 White, and this GB5 “B5” Blue.

In addition to that distinction, this car was produced without the added trim adornments that were commonly included on muscle cars of this era. This gives the car a rather stealthy appearance on the boulevard. In fact the only visual concessions to its true, street ripping nature is a set of locking pins securing the bonnet and Plymouth’s iconic “shaker” hood scoop with “hemi’cuda” badging.

This beauty also has an interesting history of its own. According to the Mecum website the original owner was a cartoonist in the Southwest. It was then sold and relocated to Oregon where it was eventually confiscated in a drug investigation and auctioned off for $405,000! A complete restoration of the Hemi ’Cuda was finished in 2000. Since then it was traded to the current owner for a few vintage Corvettes.
In 2002, a 1971 Hemi ‘Cuda Convertible became the first muscle car to be sold for greater than one million dollars. Since then the model has continued to be one of the most desirable and sought after collectable automobiles in the world. When you consider the rarity and significance of this particular example of automotive excellence, it is easy to predict that multiple millions of dollars will be required to add it to your collection. Time to check under the sofa cushions!
