Originally a project car for the Popular Hot Rodding magazine in the late 60s, this yellow 210 Chevy coupe stole the show in 1980’s Hollywood Knights movie with a few cameo appearances.

Popular Hot Rodding’s Project X 1957 Chevy 210 acted as a test bed for several high performance swaps over the years, becoming a legend in the hot rod community. Appearing in the movie “Hollywood Knights” was icing on the cake. Photos from www.imcd.org
The movie starred Tony Danza as Duke, the car’s owner, and Michelle Pfeiffer. This tri-five Chevy proved what it was to own and drive one of these cars, and barred it all on the silver screen.
The shoebox Chevy was officially called Project X and was used by the Popular Hot Rodding crew to demonstrate different upgrades and component changes. The yellow car spent decades teaching hot rodders how to build custom cars which led to the canary colored rod into legendary status.
When the opportunity to show its stuff on the big screen, the car showed up with bells and whistles on. Sadly, the car’s engine was wounded during the filming and can be seen during the race scene with the Cobra. Smoke rolls up over the top of the car and is caught on camera.
As with most fairy tales, this story has a happy ending as Chevrolet Performance bought the car and brought it back into the Chevrolet stable putting the car through a total restoration, removing all of the years of thrashing and abuse that the chassis had endured through a life as a test platform for every type of GM engine, transmission and suspension ever made.
It still resides with Chevrolet, where it continues to show new car builders how to do the job. Ironically, the last printing of Popular Hot Rodding was the September 2014 issue.
