Street Feature: This ’67 Mustang Tribute to Eleanor Is Spot-On!

The movie Gone in 60 Seconds is part of the reason why it’s so hard to find a Mustang fastback these days at a reasonable price. Suddenly, in the year 2000, Nicolas Cage and the 1967 Mustang Fastback the coolest duo in Hollywood. Today the ’67 Mustang is still as badass as ever, and Nicolas cage is still acting.

This car is a beautiful piece of American muscle whether you're a fan of the movie or not.

For Jeff LaRue of Vancouver, Washington, that movie was a big deal. “I was born a Chevy guy,” Jeff told us, “but I saw the movie Gone in 60 Seconds and I knew I was going to build a Mustang. I thought my dad was going to disown me when I bought a Ford!” Chevy runs deep in Jeff’s veins, but it was time for a change.

Well, it only took two years after seeing the movie for Jeff to find and buy his dream Mustang, the Mustang that would later closely resemble Eleanor from the movie. “I found this at Bob Wades wrecking yard” Jeff said. “It was after the movie came out so fastbacks has gone way up. There was almost no rust on this car though, it was really rust free.”

The interior on this Mustang is just as spectacular as the rest of the car. The dash, wood steering wheel, door panels, and headliner are absolutely stunning.

After buying the car, Jeff proposed to his then-girlfriend, now-wife, so Eleanor ended up on the backburner for a little while. It took eight years to build, but just a decade after seeing the movie, Jeff was driving his very own Eleanor. All said and done, Jeff’s Mustang is powered by the 340-horsepower Ford Racing motor out of a 5.0-liter engine out of a 1992 Mustang. The transmission is a T5 and the rearend is a ford 9-inch with 3.55:1 positraction gearing.

“It’s been a phenomenal car,” he told us. “It hasn’t left us stranded anywhere.” And that’s saying something because this car has been everywhere! Jeff and his wife have put a lot of miles on this pony car and it’s been through South Dakota, Arizona, and Nebraska, and they cruised it along all of Route 66. Getting 23 miles-per-gallon the whole way. “This car is always driven,” Jeff said, “It’ll only get trailered when it’s broken.”

The body kit, taillights, abs plastic headliner, and door panels all came from Mustangs to Fear. “Rich and Michelle of Mustangs to Fear are just phenomenal,” Jeff told us. He had nothing but positive words for the people and products at Mustangs to Fear and he really emphasized that he appreciated them. Jeff also wanted to extend thanks to his friend Donny Handcock. Donny is a Mustang guy and was a huge help along the way with Jeff’s build.

Although they’ve taken it many miles, it’s been a great car for them that’s never let them down. “We almost hit a coyote in Idaho,” Jeff told us. “I panicked and hit the brakes so hard I broke the brake light switch!” That’s really been the worst of it on the road for Jeff and his Mustang. “No tickets yet either!”

We love Jeff’s 1967 Mustang tribute to Eleanor. Jeff’s Mustang is awesome and just the kind of car that we like to see. We’d love to see what you folks are driving out there. If you love it, odds are good that we will too, so shoot us an email with a couple pictures and a little information on your ride, you might just see it here as one of our Street Features.
