Whether you’re a Mopar guy, Chevy guy or a Ford guy, the upcoming Mecum Auction set to take place in Kissimmee, Florida January 16th through the 25th may just be one of the biggest opportunities you have as a collector of muscle cars. That’s because long-time American muscle aficionado, Tim Wellborn, will be auctioning off 25 of his 70 amazingly rare muscle cars and hot rods to make room for different American greats in his personally-owned Wellborn Muscle Car Museum in Alexander City, Alabama.

To understand the pure greatness of the vehicles being offered from the Wellborn collection, you have to know just how passionate about American muscle cars Wellborn is.
At a young age, Wellborn was exposed to the world of Detroit muscle, starting with a classic 1971 HEMI Charger his dad brought home. Ever since, Wellborn has respected foreign performance cars, but it’s the ones made right here in the States that really get him going.
By 2010, Wellborn was able to start purchasing his own collection of muscle cars, thanks to the success of his Alabama-based cabinet business. Over the last four years, Wellborn has purchased 70 cars, all rare, unique and special American muscle cars.
With the collection has come the opening of the Wellborn Muscle Car Museum, where a number of his cars are put on display in rotation for other to enjoy.
But now it’s time to make room for some new acquisitions and that means parting with 25 cars from the collection to keep things fresh.
The cars going up for auction from the Wellborn collection are nothing short of amazing. Topping the list of rare breeds is a true 1969 HEMI Daytona sporting a 4-speed transmission, 426/425hp HEMI engine and just 6,000 original miles on the odometer. Other cars of amazing class up for grabs include a 1971 HEMI Charger R/T with an extremely rare M51-code power sunroof. This car is also just one of 63 425/426 HEMI-equipped cars built that year.
Also up for grabs is one of just 118 1970 Buick GSX 455/360hp, 4-speed Stage 1 cars ever produced, an unrestored 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 fastback with 4,770 original documented miles on it, a 1970 Mercury Cougar Boss 302 Eliminator with the rare Super Drag Pak option, a Red on Red 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge Ram Air IV, and a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am once owned by Smokey and the Bandit’s own Burt Reynolds.
Not quite a muscle car but still very fitting, is one of just six 1966 Ford CS500 Shelby Racing Transporters commissioned specifically to transport the famed 1966 Shelby Cobras, also up for auction.
Though some may cringe at the idea of getting rid of so many collector cars, Wellborn told Yahoo! Autos that he’s always just seen himself as a caretaker of the cars rather than an owner, and it’s time to let someone else take care of these 25 unique pieces of automotive history.
We can’t wait to see what kind of response this rare auction “Main Attraction” brings. If you’re interested in seeing more of the cars mentioned above or the other vehicles Wellborn will be parting with in January, be sure to check out the Mecum Auctions site and scroll through the entire list of Wellborn lots.
