When Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters journeyed across America in their psychedelic bus, Furthur, one can’t help but wonder if during their time here moments, they might have dreamed of just how much “further” bus technology would travel.
Behold the Superbus currently in development by Delft University over in the friendly country of the Netherlands. You can call this futuristic, at the very least. Just saying that whoever dreamed this is definitely working with an enlightened mind. This thing is just packed with futuristic technology.
Let’s go with the specs first, you do the math. It utilizes electric motors putting out 460 Kw with a range of up to 210 Km. These will push it right along as snappy cruising speed of 250 Km/hr. Ahem, can we say 155 mph!
Government officials inspect and green light the Superbus.
The interior of this baby incorporates all the style and comfort you could ask for. As far as the exterior goes, it stretches out a full fifteen meters with eight doors per side holding twenty three passengers. Both the chassis and body work are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Now, given its sleek shape, one might wonder just how fast this thing will slip through the air stream at top speed?
Then we have the navigation system, obstacle detection, communications system, failsafe system and control system. What this all adds up to is that in some scenarios, the Superbus will drive itself.
Consider the superbus much safer than your old skool, school bus. It avoids crashes on its own with its built in radar, providing fast response, combined with fast maneuverability and formidable braking response.
In the video above, we see Richard Branson going for a ride. Anyone who knows about this guy knows that he has the magic touch. So you can expect to be seeing this soon. Their plans are to market this world wide. So who’s ready for a fast bus ride?
