The Ford Mustang Mach 1 was one of the greatest performance packages of all time. Its name alone evokes images of tire screeching, drag racing and the sheer sense of speed. They were cars that looked fast thanks to only being available in Sportsroof styling (aka Fastback) and their many exclusive visual enhancements including a hood scoop, optional rear louvers and an optional spoiler.

Not only did they look like drag cars but they performed like them too. Most of these cars left the factory equipped with a 351 Windsor engine but a special 320 of them rolled of the assembly line with the legendary 400 horsepower 428 Cobra Jet engine and a 4-speed Top Loader transmission.

This 1970 Mustang Mach 1 428 is one of the 320 that we found on Craigslist. It’s in excellent condition with a purple paint job, chrome bumpers and the louver and spoiler options. It has spent it’s entire life in the deserts of California and Arizona, which makes it rust free.

The 428 was rebuilt 5,000 miles or so ago with Elderbrock aluminum heads, an Edelbrock intake, a Crower roller cam, a roller rockers, an Edelbrock 800 carb, and a Mallory dual point distributor all working together to produce 10 to 1 compression. A 9-inch rear with 3.50-1 Detroit Locker spins the tires sits out back. Its black interior in outstanding condition, with new Scott Drake factory style re-tractor seat belts installed and a Sony system in the trunk. It has period correct 15 inch Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in BFG T/A radials.

The Q-Code 1970 Mustang Mach 1’s were cars designed for speed and their performance and iconic styling has left a legacy within the American muscle car landscape. A car designed to tear up the road ways, It was a drag racer’s dream come to life.
