Appreciation for classic American cars can be shown in many ways, like owning one. For artist Mark Ervin it also appears in his unique and vibrant art. Mark has been an animator for over 20 years working on iconic shows like The Simpsons, Rugrats, Rocko’s Modern Life and Futurama. His history animating American TV shows translates exceptionally well to his own animation of classic American cars, like this picture here of Homer Simpson driving a ’55 Chevy.
Mark’s ability to put charisma and personality in his artwork is what I think sets him apart from most of the artists out there, and his use of classic American cars makes us like him even more. It captures the imagination and nostalgia of 20th century American vehicles and the culture that boomed with it. Take for example this ’54 Plymouth Savoy cop car.
What really makes his art pop is the attention to detail. Mark’s art seems to have the feeling of classic hand drawn renditions while still having the quality and color that graphic design and digital art offers. So what style does he use? Both obviously, he starts out with the hand sketch and ends up finishing it on screen; the final product is nothing short of creative or authentic.
Not all of his artwork has that eye popping color, some are fabulous all the same in simple black and white, like this photo of a beach girl next to a Volkswagen Beetle.
As for this classy take on a 1931 Cadillac Master Sedan, the color contrast between the deep green paint and fading red autumn leaves in the background gives a bold and enticing image that almost feels like you’re looking into the past.
Musclecars and hot rods are made out to be classic yet crazy in just about most of Mark’s artwork, but all of Mark’s illustrations are something we would pay for, not just because it’s themed on classic cars, but because he makes it feel like something more.
