SEMA 2012: Taylor Showcases TOP Glass, ThunderVolts and Vibe-Locks

A unique solution to header bolts coming loose is available from Taylor Cable Products. Called the Vibe-Lock, these bolts feature a locking washer-and-clip combination that helps prevent the bolt from backing out of its hole thread.

“You can use them on any part that can come loose,” says Taylor’s Patrick Dwyer, noting there are specific applications for headers, transmission, intake manifold, oil pan and fuel pumps as well as universal bolt packages.

The bolts are available in two finishes — stainless steel or black oxide — and sizes include 3/8-inch, 5/16-inch and 8mm in a variety of lengths.

The Vibe-Lock comes in two different finishes and three bolt sizes -- 8mm, 5/16-inch and 3/8-inch. Note how the locking mechanism works.

Installation is easy. The bolt has a set screw that holds the locking clip in place. An Allen wrench is used to unlock the clip. Once the bolt is torqued into place, the set screw is reversed to lock the pin inside one of the washer’s sawtooth edges. Since the washer is torqued down, the pin keeps the bolt from backing out as a result of vibration or heat. When it’s time to remove the part, simply reverse the procedure.

Another hot product in the Taylor’s SEMA booth was the series of ThunderVolt coil-on-plugs. Applications include Ford 4.6-liter and 5.4-liter engines from 1999 to present and the 2003 to 2010 Dodge Hemi, both single- and dual-plug models. ThunderVolt coil-on-plugs will soon be available for GM LS models.

“They perform much better than stock,” says Dwyer.

The ThunderVolts will work with factory electronics and resist shock and vibration with their high-temperature epoxy construction. The boots are made from OE-grade 550-degree silicone.

TOP Glass is scratch resistant and is offered in both specific application or in universal flat sheets.

Taylor is also showcasing its TOP Glass (Taylor Optical Plastics) racing windshields. Made from a polycarbonate material with abrasion-resistant coating on both sides, TOP Glass is designed to resist pitting, sand-blast effects and even steel wool. It can be cleaned with regular glass cleaner.

Specific thermal-formed applications are available for many popular vehicles, including Acura, Chevrolet, Ford, Jeep, Mazda, Porsche, Toyota and VW. Universal flat sheets are available in numerous sizes, and the glass comes in four thicknesses: .093-inch, .118-inch (1/8), .117-inch (3/16) and .236-inch (1/4). The Top Glass is about half the weight of comparable thick standard glass.
