After five years of production, the 5th-gen Camaro is entering its mid-life phase: it rests comfortably on its laurels as a high-performance machine, yet the silhouette is starting to get a little bit stale. Let’s face it, the car has essentially been around since the 2007 blockbuster Transformers hit theaters, and there’s little doubt that GM will sit quiet for long while the hip, new 2015 Mustang is due to hit the streets any day now.

The grand prize awards $100K and a brand new Z/28 to the winner. Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you’re fired.
TruTV, purveyors of such fine television programs as South Beach Tow and Lizard Lick Towing (who knew these people lived such interesting lives?), started Motor City Masters back in June of this year, perhaps to bring a little more class and intelligence to the viewers at home who can’t get enough Hardcore Pawn. The most recent episode, which the above video was clipped from, depicts the season finale.
The goal for this two-parter episode was to create a winning design for the aging late model Camaro, which pitted the final three contestants–Darby, the cutthroat girl; Bryan, the smooth operator; and Camilo, the in-your-face wild card–in a room where tensions flared and personalities clashed… as long as the cameras were rolling.
As we near the end of the video, we get a glimpse at each of the clay models that emerged after hours of work. Sadly, the judges (which included Pete Wentz of Fallout Boy, because why not) selected Darby’s design as the weakest. It seems when it came down to the edgy orange graphics lacing the front of the car, nobody, save Sir Wentz, was a fan. A pretty weak excuse for sending home a quite competent designer, but hey, that’s TV for you.
