Ron and Paul Cressey, father and son, will be hitting the vintage racing circuit together, but not on the same team. In 1993, the duo was leaving Paul’s soccer game when Ron spotted a 1959 Peerless GT on the back of an open transport truck. After some negotiations, Ron purchased the car from the owner who had the car in route to Florida.
Paul mentions that as a kid, the time flew by. After a few years of being on the back burner to give Ron time to finish up other projects, the pair began rebuilding and refinishing the car. After about 5 years, the car was done and ready. Ron, an experienced VARA racing instructor, raced the car himself from 2001 – 2011. The torch is officially being passed off to Paul.
Having only been built for 2 model years, 1958 and 1959, the Peerless is a rare car, for sure. Approximately 325 were produced. Built on a tube chassis, the car uses a Triumph TR3 engine, transmission, and front suspension. Out back, the car was designed with a de Dion tube rear suspension and a Jaguar 3.4 rear differential. Despite the fiberglass body, the 4-seater car weighs 2,400 pounds, though Peerless says they weighed a couple hundred pounds less.
“Luckily he can’t drive both cars,” Paul says of his father, Ron. “It makes it a perfect fit for a father-son match up in the same race.” Ron will be racing his 1959 Corvette against Paul in Laguna Seca at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (also known as The Monterey Historics) in the 55-62 GT Production 2-Liter Series.
