This past year has seen the revival of the DuQuoin, Street Machine Nationals. It appears that for better or worse this has sparked a new interest in Pro Street hot rods.
Soon we may be seeing fairgrounds filled with blown street machines sitting on sets of drag tires. Hopefully, these pro street cars will remain functional and not crazy like the last time around.
One example of this Pro Street revival is this 1966 Chevelle SS 396. It has all of the right pro street attributes without looking over done. It sits on set of Mickey Thompson drag tires and a has snorkel hood which was common among Pro Stock cars from the late ’70s through the ’80s. Further added to its appearance is the sleek coat of black paint.
Its 396 Motor has been laced with several goods including a Holley Strip Dominator single plane intake, a Holley 800 CFM carburetor and Crane roller-rockers. The motor has been tuned for 13:1 compression for plenty of strip performance. The engine is mated to a TH400 with a valve body shift which runs to a 12-bolt rear and 4:10 gears which, according to the seller, will smoke the rear tires.
This SS396 is an example of what we hope the new pro street cars will be like: real street & strip cars that are fast and look cool. We don’t have any ET times on this car but the owner brags a little about it, which makes us wonder why he’s selling it. Do you miss the look and feel of the classic pro street cars and want to see them dominate the streets again?
