Video: Big Muscle Takes on the Power of the Maier Racing '66 Mustang

When it comes to big names in the industry, Maier Racing is one of the top. Whether it’s because of their vast array of street and racing components, reputation, or front man Mike Maier, you know exactly what we’re talking about. But the real treat is when all three of those factors come together, like they do in this week’s episode of Big Muscle. Featuring a 1966 Maier Racing-built Mustang coupe, this is one pony made of enthusiasts’ dreams. Check it out in the video above.

The Maier Racing ‘66 Mustang has more bragging rights than many long-time athletes. Not only does this car sport a variety of components from Maier, the car is actually personally owned by, Mike Maier. And if that wasn’t enough, the car can hold its own with the best and has even competed among the top in its class at the Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge.

Of course being a Maier car means some serious upgrades, including the fully custom rear suspension that finds its home not only under the car but also in the trunk.

For power, the car flaunts a carbureted 302ci V8 pulled from a Fox-body Mustang. Upgraded with GT40 cylinder heads, and Cam from Comp Cams, it’s worth about 300hp. The engine is tied to a four-speed transmission, which pushes plenty of power for the classic pony to the custom Maier dubs underneath. For braking power, manual brakes with Wilwood calipers come into play.

Mike Maier’s Mustang is full of surprises, the main one of which is how well it handles. Thanks to that trick rear suspension, as well as Maier’s customization work to the front suspension. All of these parts are offered through Maier racing.

But with decades of experience at hand, can we really say we’re all that surprised at how incredible this car turned out?
