With 707 horsepower under your right foot and a wicked active exhaust crackling away behind you, the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat practically beckons you to get into trouble. It appears that even the marketing department at Pennzoil isn’t immune to the Hellcat’s charms, as they decided not to play it safe when designing the commercial for their Platinum Full Synthetic motor oil, which Dodge uses to lubricate the moving parts inside of every 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat V8.
While we were suitably smitten with the original video that we reported on earlier this month, it’s an added bonus to see how unique clips like these actually come together.
“We want you to have fun with this thing and just cut loose through the city,” is how professional racer Rhys Millen described the instructions he was given before getting behind the wheel of the Pennzoil-yellow muscle car. “I’m like… wow, this is gonna be the best job ever,” recalls Millen. Not a bad day’s work, indeed.
The crew recalls choosing the Challenger because they wanted “the most powerful car that we could find” and something that “showcased that raw emotional energy”. Which is basically marketing speak for “This car is badass – and it basically did our job for us”. Which, to be honest, isn’t really a bad thing.
Our only complaint is that we don’t actually get the low-down on how the airlift drifting portion of the “Airlift Drift” commercial was done. Guess you can’t win ‘em all. But if you like seeing the Hellcat getting crossed up around Cape Town, there’s plenty more of that here, so peep that clip at the top if you haven’t already.
