The musclecar vs. import battle is nothing new, and while the turbocharged four-banger movement has been a virtual thorn in the side of the purist musclecar owner, there have been times when the smack-talk has backfired. Take for instance, the overly confident passenger in this 600+ horsepower 1969 Camaro who jokingly turns to his friend and says, “About to heat this turd up.” (?)
The “turd” that they refer to just happens to be Dodge’s original “Hi” vehicle, but it’s sporting the SRT-4 treatment – a turbocharged inline four-cylinder that reminds us of days gone by when Mopar lost all of their RWD cars to the economy (and the government) and went FWD turbo.
The Neon SRT-4 was no slouch, but when the performance parts were added underhood it picked up its own personality and made quite an impressive little four-door compact. But still, it’s FWD and that just doesn’t go over well with the true musclecar owner, and makes for an easy target on the open road.
Sometimes, however, it’s a little easier to bite off more than you can chew if you don’t do a little homework first on the vehicle you think is a “turd”. As shown in the video above, the challenge was put in place by a couple of cocky Bowtie lovers, and at the count of three the race is on.
Who do you think would normally win? Probably the same answer that the driver and passenger in this apparently built classic. Perhaps the Neon owner can add another vanity plate: JAW DRPR.
Hey, we love the ’69 Camaro, don’t get us wrong, but even we didn’t expect to see a result like this. A quick shot at the driver and we “sYc” on the driver’s seat, but that could just be a clone thing since there’s no mention of Yenko in the video description.
What’s your take on it? Is the “silly SRT-4 Neon” just ridiculously fast, or does the Camaro owner lack the skills to put that 600 hp to good use? On paper (and from the passenger seat) the Camaro should have taken him, hands down. Oh, and keep the sound down if you’re at work, the typical reaction after getting beat is uttered towards the end.

We’re hoping that the driver just didn’t get into it like he should, but this doesn’t mean we condone street racing!
