Moviegoers flocked to theaters for Mad Max: Fury Road this year as critics heaped praise on Frank Miller’s post-apocalyptic masterpiece, and for good reason. It was a visceral journey that was short on sentiment and CGI (and arguably plot), but heavy on high-octane action that actually used real cars and real explosions, a rarity for action flicks these days.
With the DVD and video game both launching this week, the minds behind Fury Road decided it’d be a great idea to partner with rideshare service Uber to offer apocalyptic rides for the PAX Prime gaming convention in Seattle. If you’ve ever wanted to ride shotgun in an end-of-the-world ride, this week is your chance…until the actual end of the world, that is.
Six “War Boy” drivers will offer riders a chance to arrive safely from the perils of marauders, and all customers have to do is open the Uber app and request “MAD MAX” to begin the journey. Trips are restricted to the downtown Seattle area, and some rides look like they can only fit one or two passengers, at most. There is even a Ford Falcon styled after Max’s, and we predict that will be the most popular apocalyptic ride.
Perhaps even more appealing is the fact that Wasteland drivers don’t accept cash, so all rides are free. Yeah, you read that right; free rides through the ruins of Seattle. It’s a pretty damn creative promotion for a movie and video game that people were already going to lineup and buy. Here’s hoping the inevitable sequel can maintain the high-quality mayhem and destruction we’ve come to expect from Mad Max.
