Dodge today confirmed the upcoming availability of a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi engine when the Challenger SRT is released this August. Nicknamed the “Hellcat,” the engine will also power the next Charger SRT, which should hit dealers in January.

A 6.2-liter Hemi could be developed from the 6.4-liter block and 5.7-liter crankshaft. Shown is a Mopar aluminum block, but most likely the Hellcat Hemi will have a production iron block.

The news came as Dodge outlined its 5-year plan at a media event in Michigan. Other big news from the Dodge presentation included the return of the Viper to the Dodge brand and that the SRT performance division would be folded into Dodge. Not much is known about the engine. Observers predict around 650+ horsepower with peak torque in the same neighborhood. TorqueNews has posted pics of the engine in the car and in the open. Taking an educated guess, the 6.2 liter displacement could come with off-the-shelf parts. The 6.4L Hemi has a bore of 4.090 inches. The 5.7-liter Hemi has a stroke of 3.578 inches. Combine the two and you get 6162.7 cc, or rounded up, 6.2-liter. That’s a pretty healthy oversquare bore/stroke ratio for high-revving capability, and the supercharger should provide plenty of low-end grunt. From what we can tell from the photos, the supercharger is a front-drive, front inlet configuration, possibly a version of the Eaton 4-roter high-helix design. The air would then be forced upward into the individual runners of the intake manifold. Sources at AllPar say there will be four heat exchangers — one for each pair of cylinders — instead of a single intercooler mounted between the supercharger and bottom side of the intake.

As noted in the presentation, the Hellcat Hemi will be joined by a 6.4-liter and 5.7-liter Hemi models for Dodge vehicles.The automaker also announced there will be a 2016 Dart SRT with a turbo engine, but wasn’t specific to the size or platform of the powerplant.
